Stephen C. Sarkovics died in 1956 at the age of 56. He managed the Twin City Gas Station on Main St. in North Tonawanda for Mr .Robert Pullen in the 30's and 40's. He was the Supervisor of the Sixth Ward and was appointed Civil Defense Director of North Tonawanda in 1942. In the 30's and 40' s he was also Director of the Welfare and got people jobs working on the construction of the NT football field (later named George Vetter
Stadium). As manager of the gas station he hired boys from the football team so they would have jobs. At that time many players would "PG" to play an extra year of football. He made many close friends with the players and was
a big booster ofNT Football. He was known for not missing a game for about 25 years ( except for one time he was hospitalized) until his death in 1956.
The Sarkovics Award was set in place by Coach George V etter .It is given annually to who the coaches feel is the Best Lineman and the Best Back.
